Frequently Asked Questions 〰️
How long have you been printmaking?I took my very first printmaking class in 2006 in the final semester of my undergraduate studies. I've been exhibiting as a printmaker at arts and craft fairs all around the southern & midwestern US since 2009. Printmaking has been my full-time work since 2017.
I want to try printmaking! How can I get started? If you’re anything like me, you’re a hands-on learner and for that I recommend searching for “local printmaking workshops.” Many art centers, museums, community centers, libraries and printmaking co-ops offer workshops and classes.
If you prefer to learn at your own pace you can pick up a copy of my book Block Print Magic, which is a guide to all things linocut for the beginner-intermediate artist. Or see if it’s stocked at your local library!
Additionally, follow me on YouTube for tutorials and more!
What kinds of tools do you use? I use a variety of carving tools. My favorites are Pfeil Swiss Made palm tools and Flexcut Microtools. I also use Namisei Moku Hanga To u- and v- gouges.
These can be pretty pricey, so for beginners I recommend starting with the Speedball Linocutter set, which has several different gouge heads that you can switch out. I used these for years before upgrading to my other sets.
Where do you get your materials? Some of my favorite art supply shops include :
Do you have your own press?Yes. I have a Richeson Medium Etching Press and a Woodzilla Hand Lino Press. But more often than not I’m still using my trusty wooden spoon to get the job done.
Do you have this in a smaller size? No, sorry! Everything I print is made from hand-carved linoleum blocks so everything is one-size-only :)
